Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke

Dragon RiderThis is not a new book. It was published way back in 2001. I read (and loved) Cornelia’s Inkheart series so thought I’d give this a try. The story is about a young dragon who is trying to find a new home for his species before there’s is destroyed by humans. Along the way he gains friends and allies and has to defeat the dragons’ ancient enemy.

I didn’t like it – at first. I thought it was a little too simplistic, even for a children’s story. When one of the first characters I met was just called ‘Rat’, it kind of put me off. But I persevered and I’m glad I did. As you get to know the characters the story grabs you.  The characters are very individual and likeable. I especially liked Sorrel, a brownie. She’s bad-tempered, irritable but very loyal to her friends. There were some ingenious creations including a homunculus (a man-made puppet like creature) and a fat rat who flies an aeroplane (yes, you read that right) and an orphan boy who finds himself a new family.

All in all, this is a very good read and I’d recommend it for fantasy fans of all ages.
